PETALING JAYA: Teenager Taiga Hada of Japan stole the limelight in the season-opening Asian Road Racing Championships (ARRC), winning Race 2 of the SuperSports 600cc at the Pasir Gudang Circuit in Johor.

Malaysian Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi’s hopes of repeating his Race 1 victory ended early yesterday after the pole sitter crashed on the second lap.

It was 18-year-old Hada of Team RAMA Honda by NTS T.Pro Ten10 who made a good start and maintained his stunning performance to win the 16-lap race in 24:51.787.

“My rear tyre was a bit slippy throughout the race. Apart from that, I have no other complaints. It was a thoroughly enjoyable race,” said a delighted Hada.

Malaysian Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman, who suffered from engine woes in Saturday’s Race 1, fared better yesterday. He finished second in 24:56.876.

Indonesian Irfan Ardiansyah, representing Astra Honda Racing, went from 12th on the grid to finish third in 25:04.928.

Hada now leads the overall standings with 45 points followed by Azlan (33) and Zaqhwan (25).

Thailand will host the second leg in Buriram from April 14-15.
